Semmelweis University was represented in great numbers and exhibited outstanding scientific performance at the conference of the Hungarian Medical Association of America (HMAA) in Sarasota. The 25 lectures held by the University\u2019s staff made up 30 percent of the total number of presentations. Topics included cardiovascular disorders, dermatology, internal medicine, orthopaedics, neurology, emergency care, education development, psychiatry and oncology.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lectures were held by Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely Rector, Dr. Zolt\u00e1n Zsolt Nagy, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr. \u00c1kos Koller, Dr. J\u00f3zsef S\u00e1ndor and Dr. Ferenc Tury professors, Dr. Endre Zima associate professor, Dr. Marcel Pop Director of International Relations and Dr. Gerg\u0151 Merkely, in addition, Dr. N\u00f3ra Syd\u00f3, Emese Csul\u00e1k, B\u00e1nk Fenyves and P\u00e9ter Legeza residents, as well as Enik\u0151 B\u00f3na, Zs\u00f3fia Drobni and J\u00falia Kar\u00e1dy PhD students, M\u00f3nika Erzs\u00e9bet Ambrus, J\u00falia Erdi, Veronika Frank, Benj\u00e1min Hajnal, Ferenc Koml\u00f3si, N\u00f3ra Kov\u00e1cs, Kl\u00e1ra Aliz Stark, Roland Stengl and Di\u00e1na Nikoletta Szab\u00f3 students and Szilvia Syd\u00f3 physiotherapist. The conference was also attended by Dr. Orsolya Pacsay-Tomassich and Dr. Ildik\u00f3 Horv\u00e1th State Secretaries.<\/p>\n

Through the lecture given by Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely, the 51st<\/sup> conference provided an excellent opportunity to introduce the two pillars of Semmelweis University\u2019s strategy: the curriculum reform and the R&D ideas and plans for innovation in the health industry. \u00a0The conference organisers and the leaders of HMAA published a two-page summary of the Association\u2019s participation in the Opening Ceremony of Semmelweis University\u2019s 250th<\/sup> academic year. At the board meeting Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely thanked the board members for their assistance and cooperation by bestowing medals and badges.\u00a0<\/p>\n\r\n [slb_exclude]\r\n

Five HMAA members received Semmelweis University\u2019s Pro Universitate awards at the gala dinner: Dr. P\u00e9ter Forb\u00e1th, Dr. Zsolt Garami, Dr. Krisztinicz Irene, Dr. Krisztinicz Thomas and Dr. Stephen G. Somkuti. The highlight of the gala dinner was the announcement of the decision made by the leadership of HMAA to establish the Ganz Award in honour of the 100th<\/sup> birthday of William Ganz. The award named after the Slovak-born American cardiologist, inventor of pulmonary artery catheterization was first conferred upon Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely, Rector. The two sons of William Ganz, Dr. Peter Ganz and Dr. Tomas Ganz are currently the members of HMAA.<\/p>\n
