The event was opened by the President of Hungary, Janos \u00c1der, and Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely rector presented the Pro Universitate Awards.<\/p>\n<p>HMAA has become a prestigious, influential professional organization since its foundation, said J\u00e1nos \u00c1der in his welcome speech. Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely emphasized that in the past years more than 400 students participated in the three-month internships at the Ivan Krisztinicz Student Exchange Program, primarily at the Dent Neurological Institute and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo.<\/p>\n<p>The Rector acknowledged the HMAA&#8217;s contribution to the development of the practical training of Hungarian physicians, especially those at Semmelweis University, by presenting four Pro Universitate Awards. For the 50th anniversary celebration, Dr. Ivan M. Krisztinicz was awarded a posthumous award. Dr. S\u00e1ndor Matolcsy, Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Mechtler and current HMAA president Dr. Andr\u00e1s Khoor also received the Pro Universitate Award. A special prize was also presented to Dr. P\u00e9ter Gloviczki, who started his career at Semmelweis University\u2019s Heart and Vascular Centre and is presently a professor at the Mayo Clinic, and Dr. G\u00e9za \u00c1cs, secretary general of the HMAA and also a main organizer of the conference.<\/p>\n<p>In his speech, Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely said that one of the most important goals of the leadership of the university was to be among the best 100 universities in the world and that a continued, prosperous relationship between the University and medical doctors in the United States would be a key to achieving this goal.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13845 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2018\/11\/sarasota1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2018\/11\/sarasota1.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2018\/11\/sarasota1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2018\/11\/sarasota1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2018\/11\/sarasota1-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the conference, more than 20 lecturers presented from Semmelweis University, including professors and students in the fields of cardiology, pathology, oncology, orthopedics and obstetrics. Among the presenters were Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely, Dr. P\u00e9ter Ferdinandy, Dr. Andr\u00e1s Matolcsy, Dr. Mikl\u00f3s Kellermayer, Dr. Andr\u00e1s Kiss, Dr. J\u00f3zsef S\u00e1ndor university professors, Dr. \u00c1d\u00e1m T\u00e1rnoki, associate professor, Dr. Annam\u00e1ria Kosztin, associate professor, cardiology resident Dr. N\u00f3ra Sydo, obstetrics and gynecology resident Dr. Petra Merkely, and medical student and HMAA scholarship recipient Bence Stubnya. Among the key speakers were Dr. Craig Mello, Nobel Prize winner, Professors Dr. Peter Ganz, and Dr. Thomas Ganz and Professor P\u00e9ter Gloviczki.<\/p>\n<p>The five-day conference was also attended by Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Szab\u00f3, Hungarian Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Ildik\u00f3 Horv\u00e1th, State Secretary for Health and representing the Ministry of Human Capacities, Dr. Orsolya Pacsay-Tomassich, Secretary of State for International Affairs, as well as Astronaut Bertalan Farkas and D\u00e9nes Kem\u00e9ny, three-time Olympic champion coach, who each held separate workshops and met with the participants of the conference. During the event, the HMAA&#8217;s leadership committee held their annual board meeting, where they spoke about the current projects of the organization and the development possibilities of the mobility program, as well as elected new board members.<\/p>\n<p>Like every year, this year&#8217;s highlight event was the water polo match between physicians living in Hungary and the United States, which was won by the Hungarian team led by Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely 11-8.
