<\/p>\nDr. B\u00e9la Merkely was given the letter of appointment by J\u00e1nos \u00c1der, President of Hungary in the S\u00e1ndor Palace. Professor Merkely, Vice-Rector for Clinical Affairs of Semmelweis University and Director of the Heart and Vascular Centre, was elected rector nominee by the Senate of Semmelweis University on 14 December 2017.<\/p>\n

According to the Hungarian laws, the proposal for the rector nominee is sent to the legal supervising authority of Semmelweis University. The leader of the ministry sends the proposal for the rector\u2019s mandate to the President of the Republic, who appointed the new rector a five-year term from 1 July 2018. In his rectorship programme<\/a> presented at Semmelweis University in autumn 2018, professor Merkely highlighted that one of his goals is to establish and lead a student-, patient-, and employee-centred institution.<\/p>\n Dr. \u00c1goston Sz\u00e9l’s current rector’s mandate expires on 30 June 2018, and since according to the Hungarian laws the same person can be appointed as rector two times consecutively in a given higher education institution, it cannot be extended.<\/p>\n Appointment letters were also given to Dr. Attila J\u00e1nos Miseta (University of P\u00e9cs), Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 R\u00f3bert Rov\u00f3 (professor at the University of Szeged), Dr. J\u00e1nos Bal\u00e1zs J\u00f3zsa (professor at Budapest University of Technology and Economics), Dr. Andr\u00e1s Gelencs\u00e9r (professor at Pannon University) and Dr. G\u00e1bor Bolv\u00e1ri-Tak\u00e1cs (Hungarian Dance Academy).<\/p>\n Photo: Attila Kov\u00e1cs – Semmelweis University
