The 22 representatives of Semmelweis University altogether received 21 awards at the VIII International Scientific Conference<\/a> in Moscow. The student group of Semmelweis University was accompanied by Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely, President of the Students\u2019 Scientific Association (TDK), awardee of the Doctor Honoris Causa Award of People\u2019s Friendship University of Russia (PFUR).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The precondition for application for the international student conference was to have excellent scientific (TDK) results. The students representing Semmelweis University introduced their research findings in the following areas: basic research, internal medicine, dentistry, paediatrics, surgery as well as in poster session. In the end our students received altogether 21 awards during the Russian event.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>One of the award recipients is M\u00e1t\u00e9 Bencsics, a 5th<\/sup> year student at the Faculty of Medicine, who has been working on his scientific (TDK) research at the 1st<\/sup> Department of Surgery for more than 1.5 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are working on a model by experimenting on animals, and we surgically induce a liver regeneration at the Experimental Surgery for the sake of increasing the number of possible operations of those patients who are having a tumour. With this method the volume and function of the liver can be examined after an operation.\u201d, M\u00e1t\u00e9 Bencsics said.<\/p>\n

M\u00e1t\u00e9 Bencsics also added that the results of the research will be published by the research group in a few months. Among the experiences of the participation in the PFUR conference, he highlighted the opportunity of giving a presentation in English. He won the 1st<\/sup> prize in the session of basic research. According to him research and clinical medicine can function well together, by substituting each other, therefore he intends to conduct researches in the near future as well, even if he is mostly interested in surgery at the first place.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Judit Simon, a 5th<\/sup> year student at the Faculty of Medicine also participated in the international scientific event for the first time, she won the 1st<\/sup> prize in the session of internal medicine. She has been doing research besides her studies for three years, and she took part in the research work of the research projects of several institutes. She represented the MTA-SE \u201cMomentum\u201d Cardiovascular Diagnostic Imaging Research Group at the international conference in Moscow. She held a presentation about the results of an examination based on the diagnostic performance measurement of a new FFR-CT simulation. In the future this examination would be able to provide support in making clinical decisions related to patients who might have a coronary artery disease, therefore the number of invasive examinations would be less. This would not only mean an advantage for the patients, but it would also entail a considerable cost reduction for the hospital. An article about the results of this examination is about to be published.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely, Vice-Rector for Clinical Affairs and Director of the Heart and Vascular Centre of Semmelweis University, held two presentations during the conference: about the non-pharmacological therapeutic opportunities of chronic cardiac insufficiencies as well as about sport cardiology. In the framework of the visit Professor Merkely received the Doctor Honoris Causa Award of the People\u2019s Friendship University<\/a>. Professor Merkely has recently received the Doctor Honoris Causa Award of Voronezh State Medical University<\/a> as well. People\u2019s Friendship University of Russia has been in collaboration with Semmelweis University for nine years, among other things the Russian higher-education institution has participated in the International Students\u2019 Conference organized by Semmelweis University<\/a> for many years.<\/p>\n
