The history of the Department can be traced back to 1906 and the establishment of a Drawing, Photographic and X-ray Laboratory which, by 1947, became an X-ray Department under Nándor Ratkóczy. A small museum located within the Department shows X-ray tubes and documents from this very first period of radiology.

Diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, interventional oncology.

Radiology is taught to fourth-year medical students in Hungarian, English and German. For postgraduate training and specialisation, residents are given a five-year training programme. There are numerous courses as part of the University’s continuous medical education programme.

Health Care
Diagnostic Radiology includes conventional X-ray (fully digitalized), ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, mammography and angiography. A very broad range of patients are examined (including referrals from the departments of Internal Medicine, Neurology, Opthtalmology, Orthopedics, Oto-rhino-laryngology, Psychiatry, Pulmonology, Surgery, Urology, and a variety of other special cases).

Invasive diagnostic procedures include US- and CT guided  fine-needle and core biopsy.

Interventional radiology includes angioplasty and stent placement for atherosclerotic disease of the lower (iliac, femoro-popliteal and crural) and upper limbs; fibroid embolisation; embolisation for gastrointestinal hemorrhage; drainage procedures.

Interventional oncology includes transarterial chemoembolisation, tumour embolisation (e.g. kidney, aneurysmal bone cyst) (preoperative, palliative, terminating bleeding), radiofrequency ablation of liver, bone (osteoid osteoma); and port implantation.

Research projects include virtual three-dimensional computed tomography image reconstructions, virtual colonoscopy , international twin research programmes, cardiac assessment of twins and sportsman, interstitial lung disease , the role of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography, virtual autopsy, safety and effectiveness of interventional radiology and interventional oncology procedures; early diagnosis, targeted therapy of oncology patients, phase II, III, IV international clinical trials.
