Kutat\u00e1saink anyagi t\u00e1mogat\u00e1s\u00e1t t\u00f6bbek k\u00f6z\u00f6tt a Lend\u00fclet program, valamint a Nemzeti Kutat\u00e1si, Fejleszt\u00e9si \u00e9s Innov\u00e1ci\u00f3s Hivatal tudom\u00e1nyos p\u00e1ly\u00e1zatai biztos\u00edtj\u00e1k.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"keretes\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>MTA-SE, Lend\u00fclet Diabetes Research Group<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Supervisor:<\/strong> Prof. Andrea Fekete, MD, DSc<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">With over two decades of expertise in basic science and clinical pharmacology, the MTA-SE Lend\u00fclet &#8222;Momentum&#8221; Diabetes Research Group is at the forefront of translating laboratory discoveries into clinical therapies. Our primary mission is to address the complexities of diabetes and its complications, focusing mainly on diabetic kidney disease and diabetic eye disorders\u2014all characterized by pathological tissue remodeling.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Diabetes poses a significant global health challenge, affecting over 500 million individuals worldwide. The prevalence of diabetes is rising rapidly, and the disease is a major contributor to reduced life expectancy, typically shortening it by 5 to 10 years. Among its many complications, diabetic kidney disease stands as the leading cause of chronic kidney disease, which affects more than 840 million people globally. Additionally, diabetes significantly increases the risk of primary open-angle glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness affecting nearly 70 million people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In addition to diseases related to diabetes, we place great emphasis on uncovering the pathomechanism of pulmonary fibrosis and developing effective therapies. Pulmonary fibrosis has a very poor prognosis, during which tissue scarring leads to severe functional impairment and ultimately respiratory failure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">There are currently no effective therapies for these diseases; thus, in our work, we aim to identify new drug targets and develop innovative treatments. Sigma-1 receptor agonists, which are the focus of our research, may provide a novel therapeutic approach for the treatment of diseases associated with chronic tissue scarring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In our experiments conducted on various animal and <em>in vitro<\/em> models, we use the most advanced molecular biology and imaging methods, which contribute to a deeper understanding of the biological processes underlying the pathomechanisms of diseases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Our team comprises five postdoctoral researchers, five PhD students, and several undergraduate students.
