The research activity of the Institute of Medical Microbiology includes bacteriology and virology. The major fields of interest are epidemiological and molecular biological investigations of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial pathogens. Among virological topics Human Immundeficiency Virus (HIV), Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and Human Herpes Viruses (HHV) are covering the profiles of our Institute.
We are currently conducting several research projects of antimicrobial resistance in Gram-negative pathogens. We are investigating resistance to beta-lactams, fluoroquinolones and colistin.
In the case of Gram-positive pathogens Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus strains are investigated.
The investigation of co-receptor polymorphism of HIV and the carcinogen effects of HPV are scientific subjects of the Institute.
