Four places forward – comparing to last year’s result, Semmelweis University is at the 61st place in Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University rankings in 2018. The experts were examining the higher educational institutes of 50 “developing, emerging” countries. Finally, 378 higher educational institutions of 42 countries could enter the list. Among the Hungarian higher educational institutions, only Semmelweis University could step forward in the list.
The latest ranking is based on the same 13 performance indicators as THE World University Rankings, examining the strengths of each university with respect to education, research, knowledge transfer and international appearance. Besides this, those factors get high significance which reflect the features and development priorities –e.g. industry connections, international perspectives- of the universities of the emerging countries.
Mainly Chinese higher educational institutions are in the forefront in the list. However, the Lomonosov Moscow State University is at the third place. Only Semmelweis University was able to step forward among the Hungarian universities, it shares the 61st place with the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. The University of Pécs is at the 127th place, Eötvös Loránd University is at the 131st place, and the University of Szeged is at the 156th place in the rankings. Budapest University of Technology and Economics is in the dead heat with a Chilean and a Chinese university at the 200th place. University of Debrecen and Corvinus University of Budapest could not get among the best 200 universities in the rankings.
This year the rankings contained 78 more institutions than last year’s 300 institutions. Therefore, Semmelweis University managed to get a better result in a wider range.
