Background The Department was established in 1949. Its former directors were Dr. Antal Végh (1949-1974) and Dr. György Szász (1974-1994).

Profile The scope of teaching involves one compulsory and three elective subjects at the undergraduate level and various courses at postgraduate and Ph.D. levels. Fundamental and applied drug research topics are both represented, often within the context of industrial and international collaborations, including pharmacopoeial analysis.

Education Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry

The Department’s undergraduate courses are:

  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry, a three-semester mandatory subject for pharmacy students (over 360 hours);
  • Instrumental Analysis (separation techniques and optical methods); Introduction to Drug Research; and
  • Spectroscopic Methods for Structure Elucidation.

Courses at the postgraduate/Ph.D. levels are provided on drug research, pharmaceutical analysis and quality assurance.

Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry

  Research Various fields of pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry are investigated:

  • Determination of biological activity-related physico-chemical parameters, such as macroscopic and microscopic protonation constants, lipophilicity of drug- and drug candidate molecules;
  • Structural characterisation of drugs and drug-receptor interactions by NMR, UV, CD, IR, molecular modelling, and QSAR methods;
  • Development and application of separation techniques: HPLC, HPCE, GC, TLC;
  • Synthesis of potential lead compounds by traditional methods, combinatorial chemistry and parallel synthesis;
  • Elaboration of techniques to develop molecules to be used in cancer therapy and CNS diseases.

Facilities 600 MHz NMR spectrometer for various 1D and 2D homo- and heteronuclear studies with optional on-line HPLC hyphenation, LC-TOF MS (TOF), circular dichroism and optical rotation dispersion spectrometers, various capillary electrophoresis and liquid chromatograpy units, automatic pKa, solubility and lypophylicity-analyser, high performance work station for quantum chemical calculations and molecular modelling, synthetic and analytical laboratories.
