The 250-year-old Semmelweis University is the best-ranked Hungarian higher education institution in the latest THE World University (WUR) rankings, moving up 34 places from the previous year and thus ranking at number 457 among the 28,000 universities across the world.

Semmelweis University is among the 30 institutions that showed the best improvement in its overall score. The university’s 7.6-point increase in its citation score is the 14th biggest improvement in this category among the top 500 universities.

The compilers of the world ranking classify institutions based on five factors: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook. Semmelweis University performed best in the latter category, which was due to its percentage of international students and staff as well as the publications made in international cooperation.

The goal of Semmelweis University, which is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year, is to become a top 100 university in global rankings within the next ten years, and be among the top five health care universities in Europe within its specific field.

Among Hungarian higher education institutions, Eötvös Loránd University was ranked in the 601-800 range, while the University of Pécs, the University of Szeged and the University of Debrecen were ranked in the range of 801-1000. The Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the Corvinus University of Budapest and the Szent István University were in the 1001+ category. The top three places in the world ranking were occupied by the University of Oxford, the California Institute of Technology and the University of Cambridge.
