In the World University Rankings 2019 by subject of the London-based Times Higher Education (THE), Semmelweis University is the only Hungarian institution to be ranked among the world’s top 400 universities in life sciences and in the medical and health sciences categories. In Europe, Semmelweis University is in the top 200.

The creators of the world ranking classify institutions based on thirteen factors in five fields: education environment, research, citation, industrial incomes and international orientation. The classification methodology is always adapted to the given field of education.

Among Hungarian universities, Semmelweis University is ranked highest in life sciences and in the fields of medical and health sciences, being in the range of 301-400. The University of Pécs is in the range of 401-500, the University of Debrecen and the University of Szeged are in the range of 501-600 according to the Times Higher Education (THE) thematic ranking.

Among European universities, Semmelweis University is among the top 200.

The top three places in the 2019 ranking were received by the University of Oxford, Harvard University and the University of Cambridge. In the region, Medical University of Vienna is ranked highest, in the range of 101-125.

As we reported earlier, Semmelweis University remained to be in the range of 401-500 in the world ranking of THE published this September, though its partial results improved. There were a total of more than 1250 universities on the list, and among the seven Hungarian higher education institutions Semmelweis University received the highest place.
