Dr. Gergely Toldi, assistant lecturer at the 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Semmelweis University has been elected as member of Global Young Academy (GYA). He currently works as doctor and researcher in Birmingham for two years with a scholarship as a resident neonatologist. This is the first time that a Hungarian researcher is elected and provided with a membership at GYA.

RS42724_KA-20151221-IMG_3353-scr-1As Dr. Gergely Toldi expressed, 200 young researchers are members of this organisation from 60 countries. The members are elected for membership for a period of 5 years between the age of 30 and 40. Besides having excellent scientific records the membership requires a deep involvement in social issues, strong social commitments and it focuses on solving scientific and society-related problems. The main goal of the organisation is to maintain the communication between nations, scientific areas, and generations with the leadership of young researchers. Their contribution aims at supporting the evidence-based problem-solving for global issues.

“I was nominated for the membership by Dr. István Seri, a professor living in USA, who is the Honorary Doctor of Semmelweis University. I received the notification about the nomination in March, and new members are inaugurated every year in May during the general assembly of the organisation. I have become involved in the activities of the Open Science team, which on the one hand deals with the questions about how to make scientific publications available to all researchers (open access question). On the other hand, the members of the Open Science team are working on making scientific results available for the public. The team also aims at providing an answer to how and with what conditions scientific results can be shared within the researcher community. This topic raises several ethical questions in medical sciences like handling genetic data or the public sharing of sampling results.”, said Dr. Gergely Toldi.

GYA_AGM2016_Day4_GroupPhoto_1-okAs Dr. Gergely Toldi said, during this year’s general assembly, among others, the following topics were discussed: the questions of science metrics, climate change as well as the position and opportunities of researchers in developing countries. A workshop that dealt with science and diplomacy was also part of the program.
