The transplantation of 263 organs was successfully carried out by the Department of Transplantation and Surgery in 2015. Based on the updated database of Eurotransplant, Semmelweis University’s department carried out the highest number of not living donor renal transplantations and was third in liver transplantations among Eurotransplant’s transplantation centres in eight member countries.

RS23414_KA-20141009-IMG_7891-mathe-zoltan-scr-450x300The department provides permanent services for renal transplantation in Northern and Western Hungary. Out of the 167 renal transplantations carried out last year 11 were performed on children. Eurotransplant has 77 renal transplantation centres in Europe and the Department of Transplantation and Surgery was the most efficient with 147 not living donor procedures.

In case of liver transplantation, the Department provides a nation-wide service and the number of operations have significantly increased lately. Out of Eurotransplant’s 49 liver transplantation centres the number of operations in Budapest was the third highest, thus surpassing several European centres of excellence. Out of the 89 life-saving operations six were carried out on children.

“German-style work organisation, excellent group work and the exceptional commitment of the colleagues result in success. It is a real teamwork as each and every transplantation requires the synchronised cooperation of 30 specialists.”, said Dr. Zoltán Máthé , director of the Department of transplantation and Surgery.

Hungary has been the member of Eurotransplant since 2013, enabling Hungarian patients to receive organs from abroad as well. This is extremely important in case of emergencies and children. The membership also requires the use of international standards.

“Clinical activities and transplantation performed at the Department have been accredited by the ISO 9001 quality assurance system since October 2015, therefore it complies with the latest conditions of quality assurance.
